My Students

Maui is filled with an array of brilliant, diverse, kindhearted children that seek a safe, fun place to grow and learn together. The students at our charter school are exceptionally different. Each young adult reaches out to assist one another when someone is hurting, has their own individual and unique approach to life's problems, genuinely cares and loves to learn and grow, and goes the extra mile to be the best person and student that they can be. The students make me proud to be a teacher, and remind me daily why I decided to work in this profession.

My Project

I am requesting two class sets of books for students to read together next year. I choose two great readings, both centered around helping our current generation cope with the irrationality of adulthood. We've all experienced the brutal impact of "adulting", and I hope to encourage the students to continue to grow... into their most childish selves. Most of our students are led to believe there is one cookie cutter version of who they are supposed to be, but that "being" has already been... in their childhood! These books will help them reverse the harsh impact of growing up, and hopefully lead them to being the best version of who they really are.

Peter Pan rescued me from the adults as a child, and I hope he can do the same for my students!

The two books I selected were "There is Nothing Wrong With You!", and "Peter Pan". I am hoping that Peter Pan needs no explanation, as it is a timeless tale that we were all raised with. If you haven't read it, give yourself a relaxing Sunday to enjoy. It is as important for a child to read it, as it is for an adult.

There is Nothing Wrong With You was a great read my professor assigned for my class to read in college. It was a simple reading, but it helped to calm my anxiety and center my belief that I was exactly where I needed to be, when I needed to be there. After talking with our current 9th grade English teacher, we agreed the upcoming class of 10th grade students could greatly benefit from a sense of belonging right now.
