My students need a collection of specific titles to enhance their learning and assist in their growth as caring people.

My Students
My students are all identified as special needs students. They have problems with reading and getting along with others. We have a Pre-K and K for special needs students in our school that my class would like to read these books to. The plan is to have my class read these books to practice, then go
over and visit the younger students and share the books with them.
The Pre-K has specific titles that they are supposed to hear. What I want to do is have my kids read these books, as part of our reading lessons, then go over and share them with the Pre-K class. We are going to "adopt" a student, one on one and share the books as a class and individually.
A little about our school, we are very small, about 500 students, in a Pre-K to 8 school. We are in a very rural county in southeastern North Carolina. Our district is totally dependent on agriculture for it's economy. All of the kids I serve and all in the Pre-K are identified with special needs, being learning differences, developmental delays, physical delays, and or emotional issues.
As a school we are lucky to have a community that supports us, comes to our sports games, has painted our media center and cafeteria so they are pretty. Most of the kids know all the teachers and vice versa
My Project
So when the books come in, after our reading lesson, we will move to our rocking chair or bean bag chairs and read our new books. These books should be on such a level that we will be able to read them with just a little help, and master them in a few days of practice. Then on reading day, we will go over to the Pre-K class and read on to the class, then if we have time we will then get with "our" student and share "our" book with them.
For the students who have suffered from some emotional problems, I am hoping that having someone lean on them and look up to them for their stories will help begin the healing process and help the older kids learn that they can be role models. I can only hope that by sharing these books the older students will see how important that reading is, and that they will be able to find the pleasure in sharing with others.
At the very least we will get some reading practice!
For the younger kids they love the attention and feeling special that the "big" kids care enough to come visit and read to them.
For all of the kids it's a matter of sharing and caring, and paying it forward just a little bit.
Thank you for your time and interest. It is most encouraging to know that others care for my students as well, and the kids are always so pleased to know that someone takes an interest in them.
