My students need an excellent writing program (The Writing Thief by Ruth Culham) with all the trade books that provide examples of what great writing should look like.
My students all have special needs of one kind or another. They all work hard to meet their goals whether it be to learn all their sight words, improve their reading fluency, write a complete sentence, learn their math facts, or simply to become more independent. Many of my students come from low income backgrounds and do not have many resources to help them learn at home. We do our best at school to provide as many resources as possible to help them succeed!
My Project
My classroom severely lacks quality writing resources and materials. I don't have a writing curriculum, and the writing lessons that I teach are patched together using what my students need and the few resources I do have. My students find writing discouraging, tedious, and boring.
Every day I am looking for new ways to engage my students and make writing more enjoyable for them.
Ruth Culham's book, The Writing Thief, is a book that describes how to use mentor texts to teach students how to improve their writing. She provides a list of many trade books that provide students with fun and captivating examples of how they can make their writing better.
I believe Ruth Culham's book and the books she recommends could be the key to my students' writing success. Not only do my students need examples of great writing, but they need a way to make writing fun. I am hoping that this project will give my class the boost it needs to make all of us expert authors!
