Reading to Love Reading

Help me give my students novels to boost their literacy. This selection includes everything from classics and comedy to manga and will help them develop their imagination, build social-emotional skills, and make sense of the world around them!

My Students

My students are creative, inquisitive, and resilient. My school has a diverse background of learners from Hawai'i, Samoa, Tonga, Asia, and the mainland United States. Their diversity is reflected in their passions and interests, strengths and values, and unique perspectives.

My students are on the cusp of adulthood and looking to build futures with purpose and opportunity.

My Project

Every quarter, my junior and senior English Language Arts students choose a novel to read on their own. At the end of the quarter, they do a project on their chosen book and present it to their classmates, rating it on a 5-point scale. Student choice is so important when encouraging young learners to read.

Over the past four years, I've compiled a list of the most highly recommended books, as reported by my students.

This project will allow me to create a lending library in my classroom and have these books available for all to access and use.
