This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am teaching English Language Development, and I've been given the task of teaching my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students how to read, write, speak, and listen in English above a 3rd grade level. I've always believed that reading is at the core of all learning. In my experience, students find that when their reading improves so does their writing, speaking, and listening skills. Most of my English Language Learners are reluctant to read especially when our textbook is filled with stories that I even find boring. I'm hoping to provide my students with the Newbery Honor-winning novel "On My Honor" by Marion Dane Bauer. This is a high interest book that challenges students to dig deep within to understand how choices in life affect themselves and other. This is an easy reader but will challenge students to read at a higher level than 3rd grade. Though read alouds, vocab development, and critical thinking activities, I'm hoping to show students that reading is enjoyable, interesting, and can be used to gain important insights to life. Since it's my first year teaching English Learners, I'm hoping to stack my room with high interest novels to create a love of reading with these students. With that, I hoping to get books shelves that cover each wall of my room so students can eventually enjoy a classroom library that fits their needs. Thanks so much !!
