This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know that the more you read, the better you will get? Well, my first graders know this and are working daily to strengthen their reading skills!

I teach 21 first grade students in a well worn, inner city school.

More than sixty percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch and more than fifty percent are second language learners. They are eager beavers, but need additional books to help them practice their reading.

My Project

Learning to read is one of the biggest jobs a first grader faces. Learning to read is hard work and takes lots of practice. I strive to provide my students each day with time to practice their reading, but one of my biggest challenges is having enough books at the right levels to keep them engaged and motivated during our center rotations. Because the requested books will be new and interesting, they will not only provide additional titles to our leveled collections, but will also provide the motivation for my students to sustain their reading during our center rotations. Increasing the engagement and motivation will help them to do the hard work!

Your support will put sixty new nonfiction books into the hands of my eager readers.

Having additional leveled readers will not only allow me to extend reading opportunities for these eager learners, but will also allow them to build content knowledge as they read about the world around them.
