Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a urban public charter school. We are a high need school in a very poor socioeconomic area. Which unfortunately means our students do not always have access to the same resources most other children have. My students are bright, enthusiastic children who love to read and who love to learn. Unfortunately our class library is small.

We would like to add some new books to our class library to help support literacy and to also tie in social studies as well. First grade is a magical time in a child's life. This is when they learn about the US's major holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa and learn about each holiday and how they are celebrated. Teaching children about other cultures, and celebrations fosters tolerance and brings a sense of community to the school. What better way to learn about these traditions than to tie them in with literacy and read about the different celebrations that go on in our country.

We are asking for 12 children's books which discuss Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Thanksgiving. These books will be tied into our language arts program and will not only teach about the different celebrations but will be used to teach literacy. Children learn best when they read books that are challenging and on topics that interest them. We will also use the books to teach comprehension such as sequence, plot, character, setting, and other first grade standards.
