Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive children with a love for learning. They love hands-on engaging activities. They come to school every day ready to learn and to take on challenges that push them further in their learning. Not only do they rise to these challenges, but they also surpass my expectations.
My students love to learn, but often times, do not have the resources, in and outside of school to foster this love.
This is in part because our school is nestled in a low income, working-class community located in Central Texas. While my students have a desire to expand their knowledge, our resources are limited. Regardless of their limited resources, they find ways to make the best of their situations. They especially love learning through books and collaboration. They are truly an inspiration to me and have helped me grow personally and professionally through their love of learning.
My Project
"I do not have any books at home!" exclaimed one of my students in the first week of school. This perhaps would have shocked me, except as a new teacher, I also did not have a reading textbook and a limited number of novels to teach the students. My students already have limited resources due to the low-income area in which they live. However, throughout the weeks I have spent with them, I have learned they love to read.
Due to their lack of opportunities, my students use reading as a way to connect with characters and travel to a different time and place.
It gives them opportunities to see the world and experience opportunities they otherwise would not get. My students' reading ability ranges from 2nd - 5th grade. The guided reading sets will allow me to reach each student at their level. While the novels will allow them to join book clubs and collaborate with one another. On behalf of myself and my students, we appreciate your interest in funding our project.
