My Project
I am requesting classroom copies of the novel There, There by Tommy Orange for my AP Language and Composition class. I taught a different book last year, and found that at least 50% of the class did not read the book in its entirety. I'd like to try something different this upcoming school year and provide them with a book that they can connect to more easily and enjoy, while also practicing the skills they will need to be successful on the AP test.
While some people may believe we must strictly teach non-fiction in this class, I believe that using this book to illustrate synthesis, while also supplementing with non-fiction texts that reinforce themes found in the novel, will actually help them gain a greater understanding of the skills required in AP Lang.
By connecting non-fiction to topics in the novel, I hope to achieve greater buy in and interest in these topics. Students can practice skills such as argument, synthesis, and even rhetorical analysis.
I teach in Hawai'i and the topic of indigenous identity and identity in general will resonate with my demographic and provide an opportunity to explore Hawai’i’s history. This novel will also act as a springboard to delve into the greater question of what makes us who we are, especially within the context of colonization.
Anyway, this is a wonderful book and will be a great tool for exploring difficult questions and hopefully have an impact on at least some of the students. Please consider donating!
