My students need 10 cassette players and a supply of batteries to listen to books on tapes and use during independent time and library center.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher in an inner city school in Chicago. My students come from low income families where most don’t have easy access of books at home. The only time they get to enjoy reading stories is here in the classroom.
All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL) and truly enjoy listening to books in both Spanish and English. They are always eager and look forward to reading independently however there are those few that always struggle with this time specifically the ones that are not reading fluently yet. They love to look at the illustrations but would enjoy it even more if they were able to listen on cassettes during their independent time or during Library time. With the use of these cassette players, students will be able to listen quietly and independently while I work with others.
My second graders and I would really appreciate it if we were to get individual cassette players so that a few students at a time can independently listen to books on tape while make reading more fun for them. Most of all, listening to books on tape would raise my struggling student’s confidence as readers since they will be listening and following along with the book and feeling more independent. They will also benefit in the long run by enhancing their vocabulary skills and reading comprehension skills as well as fluency.
