Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Majority of my students are young immigrants from all over Latin America who have endured and experienced quite a lot for their young age. They are brilliant and they work hard every day alongside their teachers to bridge the opportunity gap and create a safe community for their peers.

They are part of the Dual-Language Immersion Program where they learn both Spanish and English.

However, for years, my students have not had the same access to Spanish literature as they do in English. Quality, written/translated Spanish books are very hard to come by, especially ones written by authors that look like my students. My students need interesting, engaging, relatable Spanish books that will help them gain a passion for reading.

Our student body is primarily minority and low-income with a high percentage of Special Education and English Learner students.

My Project

I want to provide a means for my Latino students to recognize themselves, their families, and their stories in the books they read. It is equally important to my other students to be exposed to books that explore different cultures, as well.

Students will expand their understanding of the immigration experience and serial migration (separation between children and parents in order to facilitate immigration).

After reading "La distancia entre nosotros," students will be able to tell their own stories about the issues they have endured while trying to assimilate to a different culture, language, and family life in the United States. For others, it will offer a humanizing window into the Mexican American experience.
