Reading the World: Graphic Novels for Justice and Representation
Help me give my students three powerful graphic novel sets—featuring books like Swim Team, Invisible, Mexikid, and American Born Chinese—so they can read engaging, diverse stories that reflect a wide range of voices and experiences.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love that my students are curious, kind, and always eager to learn about the world around them. They ask thoughtful questions, care deeply about fairness, and love graphic novels. Many of them are developing readers, and visual storytelling helps build their comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.
This project will provide graphic novels that reflect underrepresented voices in everyday life, sports, and cultural identity.
Books like Swim Team, Frizzy, Invisible, and Mexikid give my students a chance to see characters who look like them—and also learn about experiences different from their own. These stories help us explore important themes like belonging, identity, perseverance, and justice in a way that’s accessible and engaging.
Each book will not only support literacy goals, but also help build empathy, perspective-taking, and pride in who they are. By having these books in our classroom library, we are creating a space where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
