This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I know that when many people think of the state of Mississippi many negative connotations come to mind. It is true that we are not perfect, but just who is perfect? We are working on our image with things that we can change and that is what matters. I am teaching in an urban school where 100% of the students are receiving free lunch. We are a low performing school looking for inspiration and trying to change the culture of the school.
Readers are leaders.
Once the importance of this skill is realized the community that I serve will evolve. Our goal this year is to achieve through literacy. We are focusing on explicitly teaching reading in every subject. If we can develop a love for books within the children that we serve we will be able to make positive impacts on their lives. My goal as an educator is to teach without limits and provide opportunities for these students to succeed.
My Project
At this time, my students are reading 2-3 grade levels behind their chronological grades. Many of my students are reluctant readers because they do not identify with characters that they are encouraged to read on a daily basis. This attitude only adds to the systematic problem of nonreaders. My goal is to prepare them to be successful as they matriculate through middle school and the CCSS. I want all of my students to have a holistic experience with rich text in fictional and nonfictional print. The novels that I am requesting will enhance my classroom library and allow the students to have book studies and actively discuss and promote authors along with the grade-appropriate text.
As an ELA teacher, it is my duty to prepare my students by providing a text rich environment and teaching them that Reading is "The Greatest Show On Earth." In order to accomplish this, I need the support of DonorsChoose.
My students and I sincerely appreciate the generosity of all the donors involved.
