Reading That Interests Us
My students need reading material that is accessible to a diverse population and interests them. They need 30 copies of "Bless Me, Ultima."
"Nobody will believe in you unless you believe in yourself." - Liberace
A quote my students live by every day.
We are a continuation high school.
Students who attend our school are placed here for several reasons. Most of my students have faced some challenge at their comprehensive high schools and are attending Olympic to 1) earn credits to return to a comprehensive high school, 2) earn credits to graduate, or 3) work towards a GED. Several are faced with challenges in their daily lives and have grown untrustworthy of authority. Being able to show these students that I care about their futures has brought them one step closer to gaining that trust back. One thing all of my students have in common is that they want to graduate. I have never met a group of more motivated students in my life.
These books will help my students appreciate literature. Many of my students have said they "hate" reading. I believe they have yet to find a book that interests them. Bless Me Ultima will help my students understand that once they find literature they are able to relate to, they will learn to "love" reading!
I want to introduce my fabulous group of students to literature they can relate to.
Being able to show them that once they broaden their horizons, they may find something surprising about themselves that they have never known through a book they never thought they could relate to. Overall, I want to get them hooked on reading by exposing them to something new which they never thought they could relate to.
