This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are currently participating in our Dual Language Program in our school district. They are concurrently learning English and Spanish in all subject areas as part of the 50/50 model. This is their sixth year in the program since most students entered the program during kindergarten. Fostering reading in our students is always a priority in my classroom and a challenge to provide books in both English and Spanish. In my classroom, we work as a team and motivate each other through active learning. The program was first piloted in a couple of elementary schools in the district and later extended to all schools. Now, all of our students have the opportunity to participate in the program throughout the school district.

My Project

During this time of uncertainty, students are doing their best to learn in the virtual classroom. One of their greatest obstacles is completing their Accelerated Reader goals that are required every reporting period. The Accelerated Reader programs encourage each student to read at their own level, with comprehension and accuracy, each book accumulates points to meet their goal. As a reward, I would like to provide a gift card to have access to books that are of their interest to continue their love of reading. The gift cards can be used online and books can be delivered safely to all students.

This school year has been particularly different for all students, our school district has yet to open school for face to face instruction.

My students are struggling to find books of interest in both English and Spanish in our current platforms. It is also difficult for them to use their internet to access books when siblings are also online. Our community has encountered several shutdowns, which resulted in our public libraries and school libraries being shut down.

I would love to have the opportunity to reward my students for their hard work and to have some sense of normalcy, if only with a book to read.
