My students need a carpet for a space to call their own to read various genres and explore our many literacy centers to build a solid literacy foundation to last a lifetime.
I teach in at a Title 1 school with a high poverty rate. Many of our children receive free and reduced lunches. We have law enforcement and military families we service as well. We offer gifted and talented as well as inclusion classrooms.
My students do not all come from the same type of households, but they all do share a desire to learn with a strong passion to become life long readers.
A simple space to enjoy a book allows me to model for them that reading can be an enjoyable learning experience at any age.
My Project
My students love to learn! One of their favorite activities is sitting on the floor to listen to a story. It is a great way to encourage reading and routines. It is a wonderful feeling seeing them grow in their academics and knowing I contributed to that life long gift of reading. With a classroom rug, my students will be able to come together to learn. It will encourage them to be a community of learners. I also have students who need the closeness and enjoy being with their fellow students. The rug will allow us to have designated spots, which is necessary for some of my more structured oriented students. We will continue to do calendar, reading, and some fun activities on the rug. With flexible seating like an ABC/phonics rug, we will have another resource to help encourage literacy in our classroom and allow another opportunity for students to learn about letters, colors, and patterns.
