Help me give my students take-home reading backpacks that have CD players, headphones, a chapter book, and an audio CD of the book, so they can experience rich literature that is above their reading level.
I teach some of the most amazing kindergarten through 5th grade students around. My kids are hard workers and really want to become better readers. I try to instill a love of reading in all my kids.
I am such a blessed teacher.
I have 44 students that come to my classroom each day for intensive reading instruction. My school is a Title I school and has a significantly high number of students that receive free and reduced lunches. The school feels like a neighborhood school. It's a very close knit school of great families.
This year I will be sending reading backpacks home with some of my older struggling readers. Inside each backpack will be a CD player, headphones, audiobook, and a copy of the book. Kids will be able to listen to great stories even if they aren’t fluent enough to read the books independently. My Project
Our school emphasizes 20 minutes of "family reading" each day. Our kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade take home reading logs that their parents fill out after they have done their reading practice each night. Many of my at-risk reading students can't read rich literature during their 20 minutes of family reading, because the books are above their reading level, especially if they don't have anyone to read to, or with them.
We all know that practice makes us better.
These backpacks will give my kids a chance to listen and read higher level chapter books, during their 20 minutes of family reading at home. Thank you for considering to help my kids experience more books!
