This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from a variety of cultures and home situations. Many begin their educational journey ill equipped and find themselves struggling behind peers. Despite these differences and challenges, we have come together with a common goal: to improve our minds with quality education.
Our school, and the community it serves, strives to close achievement gaps with dedicated teachers and high quality instruction.
These young minds deserve to experience the scholastic success that hard work, dedication, and effort can provide.
My Project
Decoding is a key skill for learning to read that involves taking apart the sounds in words (segmenting) and blending sounds together. It requires both knowledge of letter-sound relationships, as well as an ability to apply that knowledge to successfully identify written words and make meaning.
Decoding is essential to reading.
It allows kids to figure out most words they’ve heard but have never seen in print, as well as sound out words they’re not familiar with. The ability to decode is the foundation upon which all other reading instruction—fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, etc… are built.
By utilizing this program, I hope to close ever widening gaps for struggling readers in my classroom.
