My Students

At our school, we are committed to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where each student achieves high academic standards, behaves with integrity and becomes a contributing citizen.

My students reside on the northeastern side of O'ahu, Hawaii and attend an elementary school that is incredibly rooted in the culture of their community.

Parents and the community play an integral role in our school and the lives of our keiki, or "children" in Hawaiian. The demographics and culture in our school are quite unique. We have many Polynesian students such as Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan, Tahitian, Fijian, Maori, as well as other ethnic groups. Our kids come from a community tightly knit in Mormon values which fosters our kids to be disciplined, build ethical character and maintain strong ties to their family. Our school is walking distance to BYU Brigham Young University. This brings many college students to our school to study education which further promotes our idea of preparing our kids to be college and career ready.

My Project

These chapter reading books will offer my student engaging books to read so they can build their stamina. We read everyday for 20 minutes and some of the students just choose from my class library but they aren't books that they really like to read.

My avid readers inspired my reluctant readers to pick books that might be enticing to read.

We looked at photos on Google of the novels to inspire their selection as well. We looked through Scholastic Reading catalog to get ideas for exciting new novels.

My hope is that students will be excited when it is stamina reading block to get reading. I believe when they have books they enjoy and readily available, it will make stamina reading easier to attain.
