My Students

Second grade is a building block in the area of reading. Many students come to my class as readers, but for those that come as strugglers, they have challenges ahead to close the gap. For students that come as readers, they need a challenge that will push their reading abilities.

My class of second graders love school.

They are eager to learn and are enthusiastic. Because I work at a magnet school for the arts, our curriculum is enhanced through the teaching of the arts. My students are creative, out of the box thinkers. I love to infuse the arts and reading as well as our other content areas.

My Project

Lexia Reading Core 5 is digital courseware that will enable my students to work on the skills in the common core that are relevant to their individual learning. They are given pre-tests to establish current abilities and then Lexia determines the appropriate activities that each student needs to master the common core requirements. Lexia also provides remediation for the student and extra support as needed. Because it is individual for each child, students can move through the program as fast or slow as needed. Lexia also supports the teacher by providing intervention recommendations as well as progress in each of the common core areas.

Reading is foundational for school.

When a child is not a confident reader, he/she has difficulties in other subject areas as well. Lexia will provide a way for students to fill in those gaps from previous years that will enable them to become confident, successful readers. It will also allow for those students who excel in reading to be advanced at their own rate of learning.
