Reading skills for all levels

My students need materials, sets of Nonfiction Reading Practice, that are at their educational reading levels. I'm also requesting laminating sheets, pencils and a really good pencil sharpener.

My Students

Think of how frustrating it would be to sit in a class, looking at a book and not being able to read the words because they are not at your reading level. Wouldn't it be much more fun to understand what you read, to show the teacher that you can learn when you have appropriately leveled work?

All my students have moderate to severe learning, physical, and/or visual disabilities.

They are mainstreamed for at least 2/3rds of their day into General Education classes and occasional high level Special Education classes. Our school is in a major metropolitan city which has a high number of students receiving free or reduced lunches. Lack of supplies for modified curriculum is a daily issue due to funding cuts and lack of age appropriate materials. Many times students don't have materials that are at their reading level so they struggle, get frustrated, and often develop an aversion to reading. I want to help them develop a positive relationship with reading by providing leveled materials so they can access the world of words at their comfort level.

My Project

I have a caseload of 10 students, but the materials listed will last for years to come. I have requested materials spanning K-6 grade reading levels. This way, no matter who I get or what level they read at, I'll have materials ready for my students. These books also check for comprehension. The best part of these workbooks is that even within the grade level readings, the sections are broken down further into three difficulty levels so that virtually any student can access the materials. Additionally, I have requested Ticonderoga pencils, the most durable pencils around, a very good pencil sharpener, and laminating sheets so that I can preserve some materials so they will last for many years.

These materials will allow me to match reading materials to the students' levels, give General Education teachers materials they can grade and evaluate for progress and comprehension.

The students wont be frustrated because they don't understand what they are working on in class. Hopefully success will engender a greater comfort with reading, if not pleasure experiencing the written word.
