This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach some of the most innovative, inspiring, intelligent, driven, entrepreneurial young people in the city. My students are eager to learn and engage in conversations which have left adults, including our superintendent, quite speechless. During class, my students lead and manage the conversation on most days. And it isn't just my twelfth graders! My tenth graders are equally capable of doing this pretty intricate dance of monitoring the speaker, allowing for wait time, and inviting new voices into the conversation.
I am elated to walk into my school building, walk into my classroom every day, and teaching remotely has been challenging since both I and my students enjoy and prefer the classroom which we have collectively made into a safe space where everyone gets to cultivate their voice, share their ideas, and learn from one another.
We look forward to walking back into our safe space, but until then, we need some much needed support, and so here we are!
My Project
Model reading is such an invaluable activity teachers often engage in while in their classrooms. I am trying to re-create model reading by giving my students a chance to engage with the text and see how I go through it, annotate it, while they have access to their own copies of the scanned text.
School book rooms have a limited number of copies of the text, and given our current circumstances, it will be challenging for many of my students to get to school to pick up materials.
I can scan entire books using this document reader, and I can show my student in real time how I read and annotate the text for better understanding and deeper analysis.
