Help me give my students the gift of reading! With your help, the 2024-25 school year will be the first year students can participate in a county-wide reading competition.
My Title 1 school has a population with many students who struggle with reading, whether because they grew up in a non-reading household, are still learning English, or a combination of both. However, they are very hard workers, eager to learn, and have competitive spirits.
This upcoming school year we have the opportunity to participate in a county-wide competition in which students will read six books and be tested on their knowledge; this project will ensure that the option to try out for the team is available to all student regardless of ability to pay for the books.
The opportunity to compete on a school team will help students in grades 4 and 5 get enthusiastic about reading at a time when they are getting ready to transition to middle school, and will help them set goals, work to achieve them, and feel pride in their accomplishments. The books requested in this project have been chosen by district educators for their high literary quality and grade-level-appropriateness.
