My Students
All of my students love learning but their ability levels vary greatly. I have a class of 27 with 5 students who are in special education. Their diverse backgrounds include some with regular exposure to books and others with little to no "out of the classroom" experience. The majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school that has over 90% of the population is low income. We also have a large foster care population.
The school is a public school in an urban community.
Recently the school district suffered a deficit and all of its schools suffered a financial loss including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year. Through the school district, I only receive a $100 stipend to buy supplies annually which isn't nearly enough for a classroom of 25+ children. I end up spending $700-$800 out-of-pocket a year on basic supplies which is a lot on a teacher's salary.
My Project
I am requesting a large, colorful, and cozy rug for my whole group corner. This will be an alternative seating area other than the desks. This is the space where we will meet as a group for small mini lessons. There will be a nice corner in the back of the room, away from any entrances or exits, designated for this area. I want to surround this rug with shelves of engaging, rich texts, some soft pillows and dim lighting.
I want the large reading area to feel like home where my students are comfortably enjoying reading.
This rug has enough space for each child to have their own individual "cozy area." Having this large rug would provide the space I need to accommodate the 27 students in my class and make this vision come true.
