This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fourth grade class at a low-performance school in the South Bronx section of New York City (P.S. 43x). Every elementary school in New York is mandated to have a "Gathering Area" for daily read alouds, shared reading, and sharing (Reading and Writing Workshop). This "Gathering Area" must be large enough to sit 22 students, and the students are required to sit on a rug.
My students love gathering in this area because they enjoy listening to me read stories, and they enjoy sitting on an "Author's Chair" to share their own stories. Unfortunately, my school does not have money in the budget to purchase the mandated area rug, and I am not in a position to spend any more of my own funds on class necessities. Therefore, my students must sit on a bare floor.
If we had the rug in the classroom, students would enjoy the movement from undersized desks and chairs to an inviting reading area. They would also enjoy reading independently on a comfortable rug. These children live in an impoverished neighborhood. Many live in shelters or overcrowded apartments where comfort is not available. They seek this feeling at school, where they do most of their reading. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
