My Students

Do you remember that wonderful feeling of curling up with a good book in a cozy nook? Currently we are doing our lessons and reading on the cold tile floor. A new rug would contribute to creating a snug reading spot for my students to enjoy their books.

My students live in an urban area in New York.

I like to think our school is a haven from the violence and poverty that overwhelmingly affects their lives -- we provide breakfast and lunch, a thorough education, tutoring, homework help, and access to extracurricular activities. Despite their challenges, my students are witty, intelligent and talented. Everyday I am amazed by what they bring to the table and how much I learn from them!

My Project

Currently, we do not have a rug in our classroom so lessons and reading time are conducted on the cold tile floor - not exactly the feeling I want my students to associate with reading! Having a colorful and durable reading rug will allow my students this year -- and for many years to come -- to have warm, snug and cozy associations with reading. The genres depicted on this particular rug not only delineate each student's reading spot but also lend itself to helping students remember the various genres we are covering during our lessons.

Though the reading rug is small, it will make a big difference in our classroom by creating a warm, positive reading space that will make lessons and activities more comfortable.

Please help my students find their own cozy reading nook and foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime!
