I work with students in small groups and it can be tricky to interact with all of the students at a long table. A horseshoe table enables the teacher to facilitate discussion with all students in the group so that everyone learns from each other.
My students come to me for Title One reading services.
These are students that struggle with reading and language arts in grades 3-5. Many of my students come from low-income families. Often they are discouraged and frustrated with reading and writing since they struggle and the curriculum becomes much more demanding in grades 3-5. Through discussion of books, I work with students to build their comprehension and decoding skills.
My Project
A horseshoe table will encourage discussion among the students and let the teacher interact more fully with all students at the table. With a long table, it can be difficult to see and "keep tabs" on all of the students. Plus, with a horseshoe table, the students can see and interact more fully with each other - and we all learn from each other during discussion.
This table will encourage discussion and interpretation of materials we read.
Through interacting with others, the students will come to understand the text better. Plus, the discussions are fun, which could lead to a love of reading where before there was frustration and anxiety.
