Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 30 active, curious students in my class. They love to read, joke and play games. Our school is the most diverse in southern Arizona; we have families from all over the world. My students are eager to learn and have become quite a cohesive community.
My students feel safe and comfortable at school.
For many of them, it is the only place they receive enough food and attention. My students live in poverty and all of them qualify for free lunch. They are very resilient and adaptable because despite personal challenges; they arrive at school every day eager for new experiences.
My Project
"Rooted in Reading" is a resource created by two teachers to provide literacy instruction. The lessons included in this resource use children's literature to teach vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar skills, which was the foundation in many of my graduate level classes. I use children's literature to teach literacy because learning skills in context is more effective and meaningful for students. Also, the reading program provided by the district is outdated and does not align with the state standards.
My students will benefit greatly from this well planned, comprehensive literacy resource.
I wish I was capable of designing my own curriculum but teachers are lucky to have Teachers Pay Teachers to provide these tools. I am also requesting many of the children's books required to teach the lessons. (I already own some.) Literature-based instruction will make learning literacy skills more interesting and my students will have reference points to help them remember. When I want to remind my students about the reading comprehension strategy of questioning, I ask them, "Do you remember when we read [Henry's Freedom Box] and asked questions as we read?" I believe this resource will improve my reading instruction and increase my students' comprehension.
