I am a first grade teacher at a K-5 elementary school. I would like to supplement my reading curriculum with a program called Reading Rods. Reading Rods are hands-on manipulatives used to help readers improve their overall reading skills. The kits are composed of color-coded interlocking manipulatives, activity cards, and instruction books. The program addresses the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. I will use the reading rods in my class of 20 first graders. I would like to purchase small group kits that focus on word families, sight words, word building, spelling, and simple sentences. These materials will be used from year to year. I plan to use Reading Rods with small groups of children who are reading at a variety of levels. Reading Rods are developmentally sequenced which will help me plan appropriate instruction for the diverse learners in my classroom. Reading Rods will help provide hands-on learning experiences for the kinesthetic learners in my classroom. I believe this program will help motivate even the most reluctant readers and help improve the reading skills of all the students I teach. Thank you for considering my proposal.
