My Students

Due to COVID-19, our classroom looks very different this year. Our multiage class consist of children that are 4, 5, and 6 years old. We have varying personalities and abilities. They are very curious about the world around them and do not have many life experiences to draw from. Our school serves all preschoolers and kindergarteners in our school district. We are in a rural area. A majority of our students are affected by poverty.

My Project

The requested non-fiction leveled text sets will not only help my students grow into independent readers, but they will learn about topics that interest them. We will use the leveled texts to conduct guided reading groups in our classroom. Students will also gain practice at home as they take turns reading these books to their families. Having books available on their individualized level that they can read independently will build their confidence as a reader and learner as they begin to see themselves as readers. Non-fiction texts will keep students interested and increase their curiosity and vocabulary. Nonfiction builds on a child’s interests and curiosity increases vocabulary and deepens background knowledge.

Children love facts and information, and while it is vital to teaching children to read, it is even more important to help them explore a range of genres for themselves.

In this way, children can experience for themselves what reading can do, and realize how it can open the doors of discovery. There’s an old-fashioned phrase for it – ‘finding out’!
