My students need a classroom library to learn to read and read to learn!

My Students
Children are hungry...for knowledge! I always tell my students that, "your brain is like a muscle...in order to build muscles you have to exercise and work hard to make them bigger and stronger. Your brain is like a muscle too! In order to make your brain stronger, you need to practice!"
The STEM Academy at the Rogers School is a new program opening up in an old school.
The Rogers School currently houses the Lowell Public Schools administrative offices, but they are moving out and moving in about 20 classrooms this summer. We will have a mishmash of other elementary schools' "leftovers" for furniture and resources. This leaves me concerned about having a classroom library for my students. I am moving from 4th grade to 2nd grade, so the number of books I have is limited...yikes!
In a perfect world, second grade students should be entering the school year in August with the ability to read pretty well and have sound decoding and encoding skills. Our work is (thankfully) not perfect though, and my students will arrive with a variety of abilities and skills, and I need to be prepared to engage students not only with books in a variety of reading levels but also in a variety of topics and genres. I would like to be able to meet each student's needs.
My Project
The classroom library is an inviting area of the classroom that allows children a variety of experiences when learning! It is a place where children have a choice in what they are reading. It is a place where children can self select their "just right book" and motivate themselves to advance to a higher reading level. It is a place to explore different genres and topics. The classroom library is a place where children can get lost in a book and fall in love with reading.
By providing my students with a leveled, high-interest classroom library, which the students will use every day, my students will be able to self select their independent reading books and self monitor their learning, making them more independent as learners. Fostering this independence is essential for our students' futures, and a classroom library is a great place to start!
Help me grow the minds of my second graders this school year!
Developing early learners' literacy skills is essential in the lower elementary grades, and my students need books to help with this important skill. A classroom library will help improve reading fluency and comprehension, and will also help create independent and self-motivated learners!
