My Students

Some of my students have already proclaimed "I can read now!" I teach a reading intervention program to second graders in a low income Title I building. We have a very diverse population that is 85-90% low income. Some have already moved this school year while others talk about moving in the future. Some have immediate family members who are incarcerated. One is homeless and his dad has congestive heart failure. When all second graders were assessed, 80% of them demonstrated a need for services through this program in order to bring their reading skills up to grade level.

It is great to see them smiling while gaining confidence and experiencing reading success!

Parents are excited and see growth too. One mother was looking forward to helping her son with the sight words and stories he was bringing home. She said, "This will help me learn more words too. I could not go to school when I was growing up because of the wars in my country".

My Project

The second graders are excited to become better readers! They are expected to focus and participate in small reading intervention group for 40 minutes each day. This can be challenging. A few of these children have ADHD (attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity). Others struggle to focus and stay on task for that period of time. Some students struggle to self regulate (stay calm or know what to do to calm down), and some just have a lot of energy!

For many, rocking helps them calm down and self regulate.

I have a traditional rocking chair that students sometimes rock in for up to 10 minutes. Then their body is calm enough that they can join the group to learn without distracting others. If they had their own student rocker chairs, they could sit at the table with the group and fully participate while rocking! I am so excited for them to have student sized rocker chairs as an option, as I have already seen how it helps them regain calmness in order to concentrate and learn!
