Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

First graders are so excited to become learners! They are curious, eager, and active. It is rewarding to see all the learning that occurs at this age. Learning occurs in many forms for first graders. My students benefit from hands-on learning, real life experiences, technology, and self-centered learning. Most importantly, I keep them interested and engaged in their learning. They take pride in their learning and feel proud and take ownership in their accomplishments. First grade is full of growth and rewards!

My Project

First grade is all about reading! My job is to teach them to read as well as establish a love of reading. Accelerated Reader is a program used in many schools to test students' reading comprehension and track their progress. One way we can track their progress is by monitoring the points students earn by taking a test on a book they read.

Not only do I want to ensure my students are reading, but I want to make it fun and rewarding for them!

In my classroom I have established "AR Point Clubs." Students receive a reward and a certificate each time they reach 5 additional AR points. Our goal is to reach 50 by the end of the year.

Students thrive off of rewards, incentives, and positive praise. Through my AR Point Club system, I am meeting each student's need and encouraging them to read. The rewards I have requested are all age appropriate and fun! My students are working so hard to become better readers and I hope to reward them with fun incentives that they enjoy!
