Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a part of a Title I, urban elementary school in Harlem. This elementary school is comprised of 90% of students that receive free or reduced lunch and 90% of the students that speak a different language at home.
All students deserve equal opportunities to become successful, life-long readers and learners!
Resources and materials are a valued part of the school experience for any child that comes from a home with little extra money, but especially to a learner who is strengthening their English language skills and helping pass those skills on to their siblings and parents.
My Project
In a high poverty/low income community with a significant population of families whose second language is English, books are a crucial part of my fifth grade classroom. Some of the students in our school often times come from homes where reading is not a top priority. My mission is to provide an environment where students are exposed to many genres and fall in love with reading!
These texts were selected strategically, keeping in mind the books that are already allocated within my library.
I have chosen higher leveled books because my library lacks that appeal to my higher readers. They often look around and open other books, but they never feel challenged. The letter leveled sets that I have chosen will hopefully grab their attention. Within our school's curriculum, students participate in book clubs within the classroom, thus why I have asked for more than one titled book.
On top of following the curriculum, I like to do read-alouds with my students at the end of the day. With fifth grade, the books are longer and some even have a movie based on the book. Students like to be read to. Once we are done reading some of these books, like James and the Giant Peach, we will be able to watch the movie in class and compare and contrast both types of medias used to tell a story.
