My Project
Wanting to read is different from being made to read. In a society where the attention span is less than two minutes, capturing the attention of young students can be difficult. They read and are excited about some novels but bemoan others. Let's get them on board. Let's give them something they want to read.
Having found a pivotal novel that has enticed them and having to return them to another school, Stargirl has become a favorite- and to add John Green to the mix can only have more of a positive impact and outcome.
Students will know that both reads have a positive message on different levels, yet, they will feel the angst of the situation and the dreaded situation of fitting into society. Both novels will have multiple levels of analysis that can be tailored to the class and their interest. Sure, we teach analysis, metaphors, and formulaic writing, but we also must teach what society must remember- kindness. Kindness, as the old adage says, "goes a long way."
These two novels will excite young minds and make them reflect on change as they transition from middle school to high school. Let's keep them interested, engaged, and in a mindset where words count.
