Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In first grade, our goal is to read, read, read. I tell my students that the most important things you will learn in life is to read and write. At the end of the day we chant, "When I say 'R', you say 'ead'. R-ead. R-ead. Read, read, read!"
My students are energetic, curious 6- and 7-year-olds who come from all walks of life.
Many face challenges at home and school is a safe, consistent place where they can learn and grow. We have a high English language learner population and many students come from low-income families.
Despite these difficulties, students are loving, caring, and try their hardest to learn and become more knowledgeable. I love spending time with my class each day - no matter if it's a 'smooth' day or overflowing with challenges.
My Project
As we move into springtime, students begin to get antsy and are not so kind to each other as they have been in the past. The books will help us talk about different feelings students may have, what they mean, and how to help them deal with them (instead of hitting their friend).
We do this type of talking more easily in small groups (during guided reading time) and we will be able to use the books as a 'jumping off' point to begin conversations about our feelings.
The white boards will be easy to use because they are small and magnetic. We can use them for writing how we feel, building sight words with magnetic letters, and writing a compliment to a friend when talking about feelings.
And the book bags are something students will use to carry books back and forth between home and school. Many students do not have many books at home and so borrowing them from our classroom helps give them exposure to more books they can read at their level. We had a project funded a few years ago for book bags and they are still easy to lose...apparently. Thank you for considering us for your donation!
