Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth year NYC public school reading recovery teacher. I work with approximately 16 children in a low income neighborhood in the South Bronx. 96% of the children in my school receive free lunch.
I work with the lowest level children in four first grade classes. Many of my children have never been exposed to books prior to coming to school and many do not understand the concepts of letters and words. My students are so limited in what they know and have been exposed to that I need to quickly boost them to an emergent reader level. I would like to obtain the Reading Recovery set of materials from Steps to Literacy. This includes writer's journals, book pouches to ensure the safety and return of books, felt tip markers to make flash cards of high frequency words, magnetic letters, sentence strips, and alphabet cards and books. Children will be able to take control of the alphabet by being immersed in all the "a" or all the "e" words, for example. The pictures in the books would allow children to work together or independently, and check the sound to letter. Writer's journals would help the children to see the connection between writing and reading and how one can help or booster the other. In addition, these aids would make learning fun and stimulating.
Thank you for your time, consideration and support of NYC's public school children.
