Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from very low-income homes. Unfortunately, very few come in with supplies for school. Our district has done a wonderful job in investing in a new curriculum that promotes enjoyable reading and writing for all. However, students are not being as successful as they could be because we do not have as many books as we could. My goal is to change this in my classroom.
I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to 25 fifth graders throughout the day.
Many of these readers are below grade-level, and I want to provide them with materials that will inspire them to read and write more.
My Project
Everyday we start class with a read-aloud. I read a picture book to the class and teach a mini lesson on a specific reading skill. During these books students engage in discussions about the text. These read-alouds have really developed the students ability to think more critically about a text. After we read the book as a class students are given the opportunity to reread the text on their own.
Books are the best resource for our students to grow as readers.
Worksheets, and online activities are great, but the greatest asset for young readers is access to books. Our goal is to have students actively reading everyday in class to develop a life-long love for reading.
