My students need a variety of nonfiction books like What Is a Landform?; Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary; and Community Helpers from A to Z to read to improve their literacy.
My students are on several different levels. I would like for them to improve their reading skills by one grade level by the end of the school year. After lunch, I usually read the students a story and we discuss the book. My favorite quote is "What are we reading today?"
I work in a public school and teach students who are moderately intellectually disabled.
The students range from 9th to 12th grade. There are two girls and ten boys in the class. They enjoy learning. On Fridays, they go to the media center and listen to books on tapes, watch videos or listen to stories. Earlier this month, the students listen to The Cat in the Hat on Dr. Seuss' birthday.
My Project
The high school does not carry a large selection of books on my students' grade level. The books will be added to our classroom's library. My students will use the books during their leisure time as well as during story time. The students will gain a better understanding from the lower level books, especially when it is time to write a book report.
The different types of books will open my students' eyes to see different things.
These nonfiction books will let the students ask questions, use their imaginations and even take them places they never been before.
