My first graders come to school each day with a smile on their faces eager to learn. They are intrinsically motivated and are like sponges as they absorb knowledge throughout the day. They WANT to learn...they crave learning new things.
My students are the happiest when they are reading books on their own.
There is a sense of pride as they now see themselves as readers. First grade is a time of great change. The students have transitioned from just looking at the pictures to actually reading and comprehending books on their own. It is so exciting to see this growth!
My Project
My class loves their class pet rabbit, Pepper. One of their favorite things to do is to read to Pepper. We are known as the Reading Rabbits. We desperately need new books in our class to replace those that have been well loved over the past 25 years spent inspiring students to read.
Nothing describes the feeling of holding a new book in your
hands. The feel of the smooth, glossy cover and the fresh smell of newly printed paper is something that my students who live in a rural community in South Carolina rarely experience.
I need several copies of each book so that the students can learn in small group environments at their reading level. I chose books with topics that the students are interested in order to instill the joy of being a lifelong reader.
