My first grade students live in the country-side of Waimea where they are surrounded by hills, Maunakea, and farming. From the time I open the door my students are overly excited to find out what they will be learning. We are still working on mastering foundational skills to further our education.
Our classroom is a place where exploration and curiosity is encouraged.
My classroom is not run by me, but my future leaders. They steer the direction in which they want to lead their learning and take ownership of it. I am just a guide that gives them the proper tools they need in order to access their learning rather than front loading my students with information.
My Project
First grade is the most important grade that sets the platform of each students' reading level. They are starting the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. What any teacher wishes is to listen to their students' reading and able to give them immediate feedback to improve their reading.
Meeting the different reading levels of all your students is any teacher's struggle.
Reading A-Z Kids is an interactive reading program where students can learn to read as well as listen to their reading. Students are able to get the reading practice they need at their personal reading level which is crucial. Also, Reading A-Z Kids has thousands of books for students to choose from. This gives students ownership of their own reading and keeps them engaged as they are able to choose what they read.
