Help me give my students fascinating folk tale and fairy tale based STEM kits to increase students focus, reading stamina, and understanding of STEM concepts.

My Students
Our classroom is a place of challenge and discovery! We live in one of the most impoverished counties in California which has been further impacted by multiple wildfires over the past four years. However hazy and ash filled our skies might become, our dreams and determination to achieve a brighter future are undimmed.
While our little town is both friendly and remarkably beautiful, many families struggle financially.
At our very small, rural, Title I school, all of our students participate in both the free lunch and free breakfast programs. We also offer a reduced cost after school enrichment program. The wonderful first to fifth grade students who visit my reading intervention classroom work diligently to sharpen their reading and writing skills. They eagerly strive to move forward in their academic careers.
My Project
Science is an invaluable motivational tools for young students who are finding challenge as they learn to read. Students adore STEM and develop self esteem as they learn how to think and behave like the scientists and engineers they admire.
With your donation of Folk Tale and Fairy Tale Problem Solving STEM kits, students will read familiar fairy tales then design a house which can not be blown down by the Big Bad Wolf, construct a bridge strong enough to support all three Billy goats, and build a chair even Goldilocks can not break.
Next, students will move on to read more challenging fairy tales and help the Prince discover a way to scale the tower without the use of Rapunzel's hair, help the Gingerbread Man cross the river without becoming wet or being eaten, and create a basket strong enough to hold ten of Little Red Riding Hood's apples. Finally, students will conquer grade level appropriate Folk Tales and help John Henry race a steam-powered drill, give Johnny Appleseed a hand fencing in his orchard, and build Paul Bunyan a wagon strong enough to carry his giant knapsack!
As the students explore the STEM design process and solve the real world problems which beloved fictional characters are facing; they will use hands-on materials to plan, build and test their designs, then improve them until they are successful.
Please join me in providing engaging challenges and fun lessons which make it easier for students to focus their effort, develop their reading skills, and gain mastery of the STEM concepts behind each challenge. The seeds we plant today might just produce the scientists and engineers who will change our world and produce a brighter tomorrow!
