Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Vaughn is an occupational high school for students with mild to moderate mental retardation and other learning difficulties. Many of the students are at an emerging reading level, but require assistance when encountering unfamiliar words. The Reading Pen is a technology device designed to enable users with reading disabilities to improve reading comprehension. Scanning a word or line from any text allows the user to hear the word read aloud, hear the spelling and listen to the definition. One of our goals at Vaughn is to help our students become more independent. Many students with reading difficulties are turned off because their reading is so often disrupted by their need for assistance. We are hoping that the reading pen might promote a greater feeling of independence leading to more success and interest in reading. Vaughn services just over 200 students. Up to 80 students per day pass through a single classroom. The reading pen would be used as a classroom resource available to all students encountering difficulties with their reading throughout the day.
