My Students
Our students are FULL of energy, enthusiasm for life, and hilarious! They keep us on our toes, and they ARE the joy in the work that I do.
Most of the students at our school are bilingual, English Language Learners, and many come from low-income households.
They have beautifully diverse backgrounds, and each have a unique personality. They thrive off of building relationships and finding connections to the world around them. They also face so many challenges, but they persevere.
My Project
Kids will lose themselves in a book if they like or love it enough. I want to provide my students with books they can get excited about wanting to read, with characters and topics they'll enjoy! As a literacy specialist, part of my job is to help kids fall in love with reading, and at the same time, teach them the foundational skills they need to succeed when they are reading - decoding, comprehension, fluency, etc. Although they need to learn such fundamentals, it shouldn't be, in turn, dull or boring. Reading should be enjoyable and fun, and I can see that many of my students are super motivated to read books that have a humorous, comical element. It brings me joy to see them excited about texts - including silly ones! - because reading these types of texts doesn't seem like work or forced upon them. I am hoping to provide my small reading groups with sets of books that I see them enjoying already, such as "The Disgusting Critter" and "Captain Underpants" series, and use them in conjunction with teaching them the skills they need to learn.
