My Students

My students are beginner and intermediate level English language learners in Harris County, Texas. The majority of my students have been in the United States for three or less years and come from all over the world. Countries represented in my classroom include Mexico, Japan, El Salvador, Venezuela, Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia, Brazil, Senegal, Cuba, Peru, Liberia, Colombia, and Honduras.

Due to Hurricane Harvey, we missed two weeks of school and countless opportunities to grow.

Over half of my school is economically disadvantaged, and 80% of the population comes from a minority group. Within my classroom, 100% of my students are identified as At Risk, and some are also homeless. Every day, we work to fill in the gaps and continue our progress towards graduation and bright futures.

My Project

Imagine: You move to a country. You do not know the language nor the culture. At school, you are given young children's books, BABY books, to read because they are the only texts available at your comprehension level. How discouraging and embarrassing would that be for you?

No baby books for English Language Learners!

Like any struggling reader, an English Language Learner needs high interest texts written at lower reading levels to encourage reading fluency and growth. My students thirst for books written at and above their current reading comprehension levels to facilitate reading comprehension and achievement. They long for fun ways to practice their emerging language skills.

Reading skills impact all aspects of life. Improving this skill increases student engagement and the ability to access the American dream. Let's help these young men and women achieve success!
