Reading Our Way Through History

My students need historical fiction and historical nonfiction books to connect in order to help make connections about what they are learning in social studies.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They love when learning is brought to life, and they have an enthusiasm that sparks my passion for teaching on a daily basis.

I teach at a very small, rural, Title I school in South Carolina where eighty-five percent of our students live in poverty.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and have an extremely difficult home life. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

My third graders are excited about learning about the history of our nation. The books requested for this project will enhance their learning.

By having historical fiction and nonfiction books in our classroom library, students will be exposed to important content through literature.

Reading about the content that we learn in social studies is an important part of our curriculum, and having these wonderful books will help us reach our goals of bringing history to life in our classroom.

My students are excited to read about the historical characters that they are learning about and seeing them in other books besides our textbook.
