Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine stepping into the music room with 65 other students, eager to put your hands on a new instrument. You are nervous and excited. My students are continuing their musical journey this year, and are in need of the proper books to improve their music reading skills.
My students are extremely excited fifth through eighth graders.
They are beginning their first or second year of band. In order to be accepted into the program, they had to fill out an application, and then attend an interview with a parent or guardian. They are all extremely hard workers, and are eager to continue this musical adventure in their lives.
My school has a population of about 1,400 students. Most of our students are on the free and reduced lunch program, and many receive free breakfast in the morning. Although we are in a low income area of the city, we are a very high-achieving school and have a very strong arts program. Our music program is well established, and is continuing to develop. All teachers, community members, and parents and guardians are very supportive of music at our school.
This is the third year we have had a band program. However, this year we are very excited because we grew from a band of 50 to a band of 65 children!
My Project
My students will use the Sound Innovations books to continue to learn how to read music. They will learn to read rhythms and notes on the staff. They will develop their musicianship, by learning about phrasing, dynamics, articulation and intonation. They will learn how to play their instrument as an individual and an ensemble.
One great benefit of this book is that it incorporates music that the children are familiar with, along with traditional classical repertoire. The students love playing out of these books! They also incorporate history lessons in many of the selections. Learning how to read music teaches a child self-discipline. It encourages them to be problem-solvers, and fosters creativity. They learn how to be a team-player, and tests scores in math and reading have even been known to improve.
I am also asking for a mouthpiece puller, to add to the instrument repair kit that we have in the band room. Repair is essential for sustaining these wonderful instruments
Having a music program at our school has increased school unity and school pride.
Our band members have become leaders in our school. In order for them to continue to have a positive impact at our school, they need the proper materials to develop as a musician. By supporting this project, you will be helping a child fulfill a dream of learning a new instrument. You will help them not only grow as a musician, but help them develop life skills and grow as a person as well.
