My Students
Do you remember the first time you read a book all by yourself? My students are preparing to reach that successful moment in their life, but we don't have enough books on their beginning reading level!
I currently have 30 kindergarten students in a high-risk, urban setting.
With enrollment steadily rising, I anticipate having 34 students within the next month with no instructional aid. Many of my students have not had any prior experience with school and have a whole lot of hard work ahead of them to be properly prepared for first grade.
Even with such a large class size, the culture and climate in my room is terrific. My students genuinely care about one another and treat the act of learning as sacred. They are hard workers and simply cannot wait to begin reading and writing on their own. They simply LOVE books! We "read" at every given opportunity in my room. Very soon they will be able to read on a basic beginning level.
My Project
As my students are strengthening their phonemic awareness, learning sight words, and identifying text-picture connections. They are just a few small steps away from that magical feeling of reading a book all on their own. With these leveled readers, all of my students will be able to feel that magic, and frequently. Independent reading will become much more meaningful to us and our love of literature is going to SOAR!
A person just cannot be successful in today's society without the ability to read.
I believe the love of reading is grown during the early childhood years. With a strong urge to read, students practice more frequently and strengthen their skills. My students have been put at an academic disadvantage in many ways, and I will no longer accept the lack of reading resources to be one of them. With your help, we can provide the resources necessary to create a classroom of phenomenal readers.
