My Students
My students are curious, smart, and dedicated. Every day, they come to class prepared to participate and eager to engage in rigorous academic learning. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 50% of my students receiving free lunch. The students who attend my school speak a number of different languages including Arabic, Amharic, Tagalog, and Spanish. Many of my students are English Language Learners. I serve 24 students in my classroom with 9 girls and 15 boys. Of these 24 students, half are English Language Learners.
My Project
Learning to read is critical to academic success. The primary role of an elementary teacher is to support students with foundational reading skills. By the time students are in 4th grade, the focus of reading instruction should begin to shift from learning to read to reading to learn, however, many students in my class require instruction around foundational reading skills.
Over 60% of my students demonstrate limited foundational reading skills required to comprehend grade-level text.
As a result, I must shift my instructional strategies to fill in the foundational reading gaps for my students which will impact my student's reading growth. With only one teacher in the classroom, I must find innovative ways to help my students engage meaningfully with reading. Read Naturally Live is an online program that support development of foundational reading skills including phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. This program provides students with engaging text and instant feedback to help student see their reading growth.
By donating to this project, you will help fund enough Read Naturally Live licenses for all the students in my class. This program will be used daily by students to help them improve their reading skills and track their academic progress. The continue use of this program will be helpful to closing the achievement gap.
