Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Textbooks. So humdrum and uninteresting. They sterilize any topic from excitement and joy. At least this is how the children feel about textbooks. Yet, reading remains an important part of learning. This project is an attempt to change children's perception about reading for scientific knowledge.

The children in my classroom are high-risk students from an urban environment.

The majority of kids at my school are on free and reduced lunches. These kids are hard workers, and many lack the means necessary to extend their learning beyond my daily lessons and investigations.

My Project

In this project, I have selected an assortment of scientific reading materials with which I can build a class library. I selected materials which I felt would engage the students and drive them to want to check out the books without prompt. Many of the books selected come from the Eyewitness Series of books by DK Learning. These books are extremely visual and they cover each topic in an encyclopedia-like manner while remaining current and interesting to young readers. The books range from topics such as different living organisms to Ecosystems to Space, as I was trying to find materials that match the curriculum that I am trying to reach. Earth Science and Life Science can be daunting topics to a child, and I seek to allow them the opportunity to explore topics beyond my lesson.

I teach Science, but I know that reading and comprehension is crucial to a child grasping the final concept.

The majority of my day is spent giving kids hands-on experiences in Science, but I know kids love to point out things that they have learned on their own. Giving students reading materials that they enjoy will be a powerful tool in increasing their scientific knowledge.
